COMMUNITY FEELS: JULY 2016
From Sudan to the Antarctic, our newest additions to the PURE 2016 guest list are blowing hot and cold(!).
ITALIAN TOURISM CO. SUDAN, SUDAN
Founded in 2000 by the same great Italian traveller, Maurizio Levi, who won the Camel Trophy race back in 1984, The Italian Tourism Co. Sudan was born out of his love for this diverse country and its hospitable people. Now the largest DMC in Northern Sudan, they are passionate about introducing travellers to this original and somewhat mysterious destination, at that special point where African and Arabic cultures meet. Specialising in cultural and archaeological journeys, Italian Tourism Co. Sudan offers tailor-made itineraries featuring anything from Battlefield tours to birdwatching. And here’s a fact for you: Sudan has more pyramids than Egypt!
ANGAMA MARA, KENYA
With views that stretch for miles across the Maasai Mara 300 metres below, the rare beauty and romance of Angama Mara has an almost dreamlike quality. With two separate camps dotted along the edge of the Rift Valley, each tented suite has a magnificent 180 degree view across the same setting used in the movie, Out of Africa. In fact, the resort’s architecturally dramatic, colonial-inspired guest areas were inspired by Nairobi’s Muthaiga Club, built in 1917 and famously featured in the movie Out of Africa. The site boasts unrivalled exclusivity, with a private airfield and a track directly down into the Reserve.
RIAD FES, MOROCCO
Voted one of Morocco’s Sexiest Hotels by Forbes Traveller, the splendour of Riad Fès transports guests back in time to live like Fassi nobility. Tucked in the heart of the ancient city of Fez, the lavish décor combines oriental influences with contemporary design, mingling warm colours with raw materials. At the centre of the Riad is a glistening pool, while a roof terrace above affords spectacular views of the Medina and the Middle Atlas foothills. Guests can enjoy a range of activities – from a guided tour of the Medina and ramparts; to daytrips to Roman ruins and the Valley of the Monkeys; to golf escapes and cooking classes.
HAPUKU LODGE & TREE HOUSES, NEW ZEALAND
Originally a deer farm, with mountains to the west, ocean to the east and deer all around, it wasn’t long before the Wilson family realised that Hapuku would be a special place for guests to visit – and so the idea for the Lodge was planted. Executive Chef and 2011 MasterChef Finalist Fiona Read makes tasteful use of the local agriculture and fishing culture to create a unique, locally-sourced and seasonal menu for guests; and the Wilsons’ emphasis on creating the “best possible sleep environment” is music to our ears – on hearing about the custom mattresses designed especially for the Lodge, we feel immediately sleepy…
ONE OCEAN EXPEDITIONS, ARCTIC & ANTARCTIC
For guests wanting to come face to face with some of the most stunning yet fragile areas of our planet, One Ocean Expeditions’ Arctic and Antarctic ship expeditions can make that dream a reality. Built on a foundation of social responsibility and global mindedness, their team includes specialist expedition leaders, marine biologists, naturalists, adventurers, historians, photographers and a hospitality team catering to guests’ every need. From off-ship activities such as hiking, sea kayaking, wildlife viewing, and even cycling, to onboard options including educational workshops, yoga, massage therapy and evening nightcaps in the bar, there’s no doubt it’ll be an experience to remember.
