When Concorde launched back in 1969, it revolutionised air travel like never before, travelling at twice the speed of sound and reaching 60,000 feet in height – so high that passengers could see the curvature of the earth. While it retired back in 2003, many attempts have been made to try to match its innovation and pioneering technology. Could the Airlander 10 be a new contender?
Henry Cookson Adventures – a travel company that know the luxury market inside out – is set to be the first to trial The Airlander 10, which is in on course to change the market in ‘hyper-efficient’ aircrafts. And what makes it so different? It’s not only the fact that it can stay in the air for weeks on end: it’s also that it can land almost anywhere, which opens up the possibility of travel to places across the globe where touch-down has previously been impossible.
To make this a reality, they’ve teamed up with world-class explorers, scientists and conservationists, and trialled the likes of landing in Namibia’s Namib desert, the Bolivian Salt Flats and even the North Pole. The Airlander 10 has been created to enable take-off on any terrain without needing a long runway, from ice, to water, to desert.
Thankfully, the Airlander 10 has also been developed to be environmentally friendly, with lower pollution levels than a normal aircraft, which covers both its carbon footprint (it has a lower fuel-burn) and land-noise pollution. The fixed-wing aircraft has also been constructed to have lower operating costs and maintenance needs, which all contributes to the fact that the Airlander is going to be seriously hot property when it launches into the mainstream.
