Meet the Challengers: Day 4
Meet the challengers putting their mental and physical limits to the test on the groundbreaking inaugural PURE Pursuit in Iceland…
President and CEO at Mountain Travel Sobek
An enthusiastic and inveterate adventurer, Kevin is happiest in the field—he has recently led trips to remote areas of North Korea, western China’s Xinjiang territory, Myanmar’s Keng Tung state (long closed off to tourism), Iran, and last September he led an England Coast to Coast 200 mile charity trek for MTS’s Nepal Relief Fund. He has climbed Mount McKinley, run the Grand Canyon in dories, crewed on the winning sailboat during the Southern Ocean Racing Conference’s Pineapple Cup, and completed an Outward Bound educator’s program.
Kevin is a Royal Geographic Society Fellow, is a member of The Explorers Club, and he has been active in the Young/World President’s Organization, rising to Chapter Chairman. Kevin got his start in venture capital, and before coming to MTS was President of HotLinks Network (an early predecessor of todays’ search and social media companies). He has been involved in all phases of company development: start up, turnaround, capital raising, search fund, strategic re-positioning. But with MTS he found his true love—helping others explore the world’s far corners. Kevin has a B.A. and M.B.A. from Stanford, is married to Diann (Stanford B.A.), and they have two sons, also avid explorers.
A Yale graduate and Manhattan native, Barkley spent the majority of her young life traveling before turning her passion into a career.
With parents in the luxury hotel business, Barkley spent much of her youth on a small Caribbean island amidst the chaos of a developing hotel. Though growing up she was constantly pressured to go into the family business, and had acquired many of the tools to do so, she insisted on paving her own path.
Barkley studied History and French at Yale University, prompting her to live in Paris, where she spent weeks at a time traveling throughout Europe. Grappling with wanderlust, but grounded in realism, she returned to New York to pursue a job in finance; it only took a few years to realise she was hopelessly unfulfilled, but unsure how to marry her passions for business and travel.
In 2009, Barkley had the unique opportunity to join a travel start-up, which blended editorial content with travel planning. She took a risk, and over five years helped build a company that has over forty employees today. In 2015, she resigned as the Managing Director of this company and with three incredible women, launched Local Foreigner; a boutique consultancy specialising in curated travel.
Kate Corey founded Chicago based Nomadic Souls in June 2014 after years in the travel industry learning from the best. For Kate, travel is not only a vocation but a lifelong passion and calling. It dates from her early days at an international preparatory school, to her collegiate years spent roaming the globe; she ultimately traveled extensively throughout six continents by her early 20s before relocating to the United Kingdom for her post-graduate education.
Having lived in Asia, Europe and North America, Kate is no stranger to the dynamic differences in cultures across the world. She brings to the travel industry a Bachelor of Arts degree in Linguistics, a Master of Science in International Marketing and an unquenchable thirst for adventure. She surrounds herself with passionate people who share her desire to explore, learn and grow through the wonder of the world around us.
