Unlike all our other categories, where the PURE community is asked to apply, the Judges’ Choice category was introduced to allow our judging panel to nominate a person, project or organisation from outside the PURE community that nonetheless embodies PURE’s ethos to Change Worlds, whether through exploring further, protecting the planet or reconnecting travellers with their loved ones and themselves.
Discover this year’s shortlist below and remember to vote for your winner by 12 September. The winners will be revealed at the Awards Party in Marrakech on Tuesday 13 September, brought to you by Tourism Australia and hosted by Sofitel Palais Impérial.
Owner, Nikoi Island and Cempedak Island
Nominated by: Gisela Williams
Gisela says: “Andrew is a huge believer in sustainability and the double bottom line. Cempedak is being built almost entirely out of bamboo. He brought in some Balinese architects who helped out with the Green School. He is an amazing guy. This project would absolutely win the Sustainable Design awards hands down. But he is also very pioneering when it comes to innovative environmental infrastructure and practices.”
BEN GOLDSMITH AND LUCA DEL BONO
Founders, Aeolian Islands Preservation Fund
Nominated by: Maria Shollenbarger
KRIS MCDIVITT TOMPKINS
Nominated by: Jen Murphy
Jen says: “I met her and her late husband, Doug, last year in Chile and got to experience some of their work first hand. They have protected more land than any private individuals in history. Doug, the founder of North Face and Esprit, tragically died in a kayak accident in December 2015 and now Kris is left to create six new national parks—to complement the five she and Doug already implemented, which total nearly 2 million acres—on her own. To carry on without missing a step in the face of such grief shows true strength as an individual and commitment to their shared mission. A lot of people preserve land, but the way they’ve worked with local communities, re-established pride in local traditions, and brought the governments of two very different countries together to accomplish a common goal of preservation has been truly remarkable.”
Owner, Reserva do Ibitipoca
Nominated by: Catherine Fairweather
