Can you be interesting for three minutes? How about change the world?
If even the smallest part of you is whispering ‘yes’ (or just ‘maybe’), we want to hear from you.
For PURE’s first collaborative un-conference, MATTER, brought to you by Tourism Australia, we’re seeking people with something to say. Whether it’s the passion that keeps you going day-to-day or the burning issue that keeps you up at night: as long as it’s intriguing, inspiring or interesting (and in some way relates to the topic of ‘Small Promises Change Worlds’), it could be just what’s needed to spark a world-changing insight in someone else.
Enter SPARK: your opportunity to share what really matters to you with the PURE community. New for 2016, we’re launching our search for the boldest souls among you to get up on the main stage on Monday 12 September in an exciting, enlivening new format. Here’s what it all means and how to submit your SPARK talk for consideration…
A million miles from your traditional conference address, SPARK talks are short, sharp and succinct presentations that cut to the core of the matter. Each selected SPARK speaker will have 15 slides, automatically moving forwards every 15 seconds, to give a total of 3 minutes 45 seconds on stage. If that sounds scary, it’s meant to be – the whole point of a SPARK talk is to force speakers to be concise, thoughtful and really identify the key points they want to get across, in a simple and engaging manner. Let’s face it, if you can’t keep people’s attention for 225 seconds, is what you want to say worth saying at all? However, for those brave enough to put their ideas through the process, there’s a lot to gain – as well as getting the attention of our community (audience expected to be in the hundreds) and encouraging them to share related insights, rethinking your subject in this way could open new avenues in your own approach.
A SPARK talk in action at LE 2016
The only limit we’re setting is that your SPARK talk must in some way relate to the topic of ‘Small Promises Change Worlds’. We want to see the small steps or big ideas that people could take or have taken to change the world, but how you interpret that is up to you: it could relate to conservation, community, transformational travel, design, technology, marketing, or something else entirely. The most important thing is that you pick strong stories with an original point of view – what do you really care about? What do you know that no-one else does? Once you’ve answered these questions, you’re probably going in the right direction.
Only the most relevant and interesting SPARK talk pitches will make it through to the main stage. Just fill in the form below by 26 August (late submissions will not be considered) and those chosen will be informed a few weeks before PURE, alongside with a few practical guidelines for how to create the most effective presentation. You do not have to be a registered PURE 2016 attendee to apply, but please note that you must be available and prepared to speak in Marrakech on Monday 12 September, as well as attending a rehearsal on Sunday 11 September. Good luck – we can’t wait to hear how you want to change the world.
