TOM MARCHANT TALKS PURE PURSUITS
The Owner and Co-Founder of Black Tomato gives his perspective on his first PURE Pursuits experience in Iceland…
Having long been a fan of PURE and the community and authority that Beyond Luxury has created around it, I was intrigued when I heard about the inaugural PURE Pursuits experience. Understanding that it would be a chance to connect and engage with like minded individuals and thought leaders in travel within the setting of a spectacular location was a huge draw. Knowing that it was the brain child of Serge and his team cemented my need to apply to be a part of it.
From the off, the beauty of the event was that, whilst you knew you were setting off on a journey, the intricate details were kept a surprise. The sense of expectation and not knowing what was round the corner fuelled my sense of anticipation, which is always a great way to arrive at an event. Cleverly, the team sent out kits of inspiration to get you thinking on certain topics of discussion – and this only added to my excitement of getting in-country, connecting with interesting people and discussing topics that were central to my business and that of the industry.
Needless to say, the event delivered in building anticipation; but, like with all great travel, there is then the need to deliver. In its outstanding enticement strategy, PURE Pursuits set itself its own challenge: delivering on the hype… But deliver it did. The set up of the un-conference was fantastic. To bring together a broad range of people who all connected over one thing – ‘the love of and pursuit of delivering the best travel experience in the world’ – in an environment that inspired you at every moment led to one of the most inspirational journeys I have had the pleasure to take.
Eschewing the mundane of dull meeting rooms, the premise of the event was to let the environment and experiences within it fuel debates, start conversations, ask questions and create inspiration. Each day presented new ways to see and experience Iceland, and different opportunities to engage with and build relationships with the other participants. It was the perfect combination of confirming why we do what we do (as embodied by the outstanding experiences we had – from glacier hiking to diving between tectonic plates), while seeking to determine how we can be better at what we do and to drive new ideas within the industry that we all operate in. These discussions started and ended the day over wonderful meals and saw conversations continue throughout the day and long into the night. PURE Pursuits wanted to spark ideas amongst us. They did more than that. They lit fires under us that continue to burn long after the trip ended and will fuel how we operate our businesses and contribute to the industry long into the future.
We are lucky in the travel industry to get invited to many wonderful events around the world, but it is often hard to find time to see them all. As much as we may want to, we can’t get to all of them, so you have to be judicious in how you pick what to do. PURE Pursuits arrived with intrigue, fired my anticipation and then wholeheartedly delivered one of the most fulfilling travel industry experiences I have ever had the pleasure to partake in. As well as the insights that I have taken back to Black Tomato and the working relationships that have been strengthened because of the trip, I also have been fortunate enough to build friendships that will enrich my life for many years to come. Beneficial for your business, beautiful experiences and blossoming friendships. It was the perfect trip. PURE Pursuits has set the benchmark for innovation and inspiration in bringing together those that wish to contribute to and learn from our wonderful, and ever captivating industry.
